He took some kind of calcium supplement at some time that was rock and his body's just trying to get rid of it through the nail. Our body's try to get rid of a lot of toxic minerals in the hair and nails, and that's usually calcium buildup.
Sometimes if you've been a big salt eater, salt will cause a destruction of calcium in the body, and then that can cause white streaks or spots too.
